Headlines throw around billions and trillions until the words lose meaning. Grouping digits in threes from the right — and naming each group — makes large numbers easier to read and compare.

Compare sizes
A billion seconds is about 32 years; a million seconds is about 11 days.
Using commas correctly
Write 12,345,678,901 as twelve billion, three hundred forty-five million, six hundred seventy-eight thousand, nine hundred one.
Scientific notation
For very large or small values, 3.2 × 10⁶ is clearer than 3,200,000 in technical writing.
