Income Tax Calculator
Use this tool to get a quick idea of how much federal income tax you might owe for a given year. It applies the current tax brackets, standard or itemized deductions, and the chosen filing status.
The result is an estimate; actual liability can differ due to credits, additional income sources, or changes in tax law. For official guidance, see the IRS website.
Calculators Wiki provides the calculator without tracking or ads.
How it's calculated
Steps
- Choose filing status (single, married filing jointly, etc.)
- Enter total taxable income
- Subtract the standard deduction or itemized deductions
- Apply the progressive tax brackets for the year
- Subtract any non‑refundable credits (e.g., child tax credit)
Formula ``` Tax = Σ (portion of income in bracket i) × rate_i - credits ```
Worked example (2023 single filer)
- Gross income: $80,000
- Standard deduction: $13,850 → taxable income = $66,150
- 2023 brackets for single:
- - 10% on first $11,000 = $1,100
- - 12% on next $33,725 ($44,725‑$11,000) = $4,047
- - 22% on remaining $22,425 ($66,150‑$44,725) = $4,934
- Total before credits = $1,100 + $4,047 + $4,934 = $10,081
- No credits assumed → estimated tax = $10,081
