One low test does not always ruin a semester — unless it is heavily weighted. Understanding weighted averages helps you set realistic targets for remaining work.

Weighted average

Semester grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weights)

Example

Tests (70% weight): 62% average Homework (30% weight): 95% average Overall: 0.7 × 62 + 0.3 × 95 = 71.9%

Planning a recovery

  1. List remaining assignments and their weights
  2. Calculate the average you need on what is left
  3. Focus effort where points are worth the most
